I can't help but think of that tumblr post about John thinking badly of Bobby for knowing how to cook and Bobby's response of "Yeah, I eat"

I love that internally Dean is starting to rebel against John's decrees. He isn't just accepting it as truth, he knows the cooking thing is bullshit without a second thought. Cas is doing that for him just by accepting and loving Dean for himself and its beautiful.

he is starting to question it all because he's been shown another way of life where he can just... be. and not jump through ridiculous social hoops of what's proper or what's unacceptable according to John's arbitrary definitions

I had no idea women needed to take care of men as part of their nature. Why don’t you come tell me to my face, John Winchester. I’d love to hear more theories about what women and men do, especially in the country.

such wisdom from a man who clearly knows just. so much. about women and about other people's inner lives.

dean's like hmmm yea i don't think i'll be incorporating these beliefs into my world view, thanks! john looks so so stupid. john don't you know food is love? cooking is a gesture of love? the way dean immediately wants to cook for kate and adam to make them feel welcome. his heart is huge and he just wants to share a meal with them and do something nice<3 he baked those rice krispy's the night before to welcome them. and then after the egg incident he immediately thinks of food as a way to divert adam's attention and offer the promise of a good meal. then dean helping kate cook, showing her how to navigate the kitchen and all its quirks. he's like please! this is how i show affection! i need to cook or i'll eggsplode!

he WILL eggsplode, that's just the very thing of it. and it's funny because Dean understood the reason for this visit and that John had basically said "our mission is to make Kate decide to move out here for love and family" and Dean is like "GOT IT. breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and desserts all covered with substitutes for picky eaters. Kate will put her feet UP and enjoy a break from that exhausting single mom life. would a bouquet of flowers as a welcome gesture be too much? what if they were just wildflowers from around the ranch?" meanwhile John is like "no. that is not how we make women comfortable in the house. hand her a dustpan and broom, man."
